View (from property/room) in The Culvert
The hotel is located on a hill with gorgeous seaview. One can access the beach but need to walk about 200m to get to the sea during low tide. The beach area is beautiful. Nice rocks and pretty vegetation to take photos. Property has 2 nice pools to chill and a tiny sauna that can fit at most 3 persons. There is also a small gym, a library and 2 lookout pavillion to enjoy the seaview and sunset This is a nice place to do nothing and just chill for a few days. The restaurant Tanju serves nice food. The room (culvert) came with decent and tasty breakfast. A choice of western (eggs, sausage, ham and beans) or asian breakfast (fried noodles or fried rice) with free flow of bread, cereal and beverages for the first two days and the last (Saturday) was a buffet with almost similar choice of food as mentioned. The culvert (room) is limited in space (mine faces the sea and situated just in front of the main building). The moment one step into the culvert, one would be just climbing onto the bed. Not much or very limited luggage space. I just organized my daily needs and tuck my big backpack under a small table. A small safe is provided and also a small tablet (useless and just occupying table space). The layout of the bathroom is tight but functional and comes with necessary amenities. Overall the setup is cosy and bed is very comfortable. Wifi connection was mostly great. Staff is very friendly and courteous. Front desk informed me of the space issue and gave me an option to upgrade to a bigger space when I checked in. (I believe it will just cost me more if I took the offer.) Overall, a pleasant experience. Enjoyed walking around the beach, watching the sea from my culvert and chilling and swimming in both pools. Flipside, may not be appropriate for people suffering from claustrophobia or anyone 1.6m or more in height will find it challenging to fit into the culvert.

The resort is about an hour's drive north from the Kuching International Airport, depending on traffic. We decided on a hotel pick up but you could easily get a Grab, which is quite cheap. To put things in perspective this resort is a good place to chill for a couple. Families with children may find the space more challenging. The room design is interesting (literally sleeping in a culvert) so you need to manage your expectations in terms of size as the product was delivered as advertised. A little more challenging if you are tall or a little older (as we were). Nevertheless, having said that, the room was comfortable to sleep in at the end of the day and it was clean. If you want a little more space then I would suggest upgrading to a de luxe, which is also reasonably priced. Breakfast was a nice simple spread of local dishes (which they change around daily), cereal, simple western style eggs and hashes, and juices. The real nice thing was having breakfast facing the sea with a nice breeze and a lovely selection of music. The resort itself is nestled in a primary forest and has a private beach. The sea is quite shallow for almost 700m out but is nice for walks, looking at some local sea life like crabs. There is also a lovely view of the sunset either from the beach or the sunset deck. The staff all converse well in English, have a very friendly disposition and are extremely helpful. Just ask the if you need anything (but do note that some requests come at a small price). There are also shuttles from the resort to places of interest and back and these are reasonably priced.

The staff were fantastic! Everyone was so nice and interacted with us as friends. We really appreciated those personal interactions. The resort is lovely, set on a hillside in the forest, invisible from the shoreline looking up. There are 2 lovely swimming pools, stairs to the beach, a sauna, a gorgeous sunset deck with lounge chairs, 2 bars, a terrific restaurant, and a pet hedgehog. They show movies by the pool at night. We arranged an excursion with the hotel and it was great value and excellent. It was fun to get to know other guests; people come to vacation here from all over Malaysia and beyond. The rooms are in converted concrete drainpipes, and as hilarious as that is, they have been thoughtfully converted into luxurious rooms with attached bathrooms. They’re very tight, though, and you have to climb over the bed to reach the WC which is challenging with 2 people. Would be perfect for one person with no stuff! The king-size units have some extra space, worth it if you’re staying more than a night or two.

Overall incredible value for money. Most of all, privacy and quietness of rooms. No banging doors next to your head, no hearing neighbours through the walls. Some rooms are a little close to the road though and might have more noise. Room had nice lighting, a very comfortable mattress, super cosy feeling and small things like slippers, umbrella and a beach bag to make life easier. Amazing green resort, nicely designed with many cute spots and paths to discover. Two infinity pools with loafers and views, different swings to relax and read a book, a sauna (which heats up properly, great for a monsoon day), private beach, gym, plus a poolside bar and a reading room (both of which were closed while I was there, low season I suppose). Super friendly and helpful staff.

Location is incredible. Nested into the side of a hill, with little environmental impact, and incredible views of the South China Sea! The design of the culvert is unique and it is one of the most interesting places I have stayed. There are two pools with fabulous views, a sauna, gym and a library. Beach access and lots of lovely places to wander. The views from the culverts are breathtaking. I would recommend spending a little extra and booking a culvert with a sea view. If you want space then definitely book the larger deluxe culvert. Food options are limited and fairly basic. The staff are wonderful and if there are issues during your stay raise it with the staff and they will go out if their way to fix it as opposed to writing a bad review!
